  3. Tips for Staying Safe While Running After Dark

darkrunThe winter days are short, and whether you are running in the early morning or after work, it’s important to stay safe while running in the dark.  Running in the dark can be a bit tricky, but you just have to be smart about it.  While winter running tips generally focus on how to stay warm and protected from the weather, these are focused on how to stay safe and seen in the dark.

    1. Be seen: this is the most important.  Wear light colored clothing and some sort of reflective gear.  You can also clip two flashing bicycle lights to your waistband or jacket for added visibility.  Remember that even though you may see a car, the driver might not see you. If you're in a state where the weather is warm and you have exposed legs and arms, you can opt for the white or gold colored KT Tape Kinesiology Therapeutic athletic tape instead of some of the darker colors.  The light colors will help with visibility.
    2. Run smart.  Run in groups or pairs when you can.  There’s safety in numbers.  Tell someone or leave a note about where  you are going, how long you expect to be gone and your running route.   The route should be one that you are comfortable with during the summertime, so that you know what to expect in the winter as well.  Look for a route that has plenty of room and is well lit.
    3. Be aware.  Don’t use headphones, since they can reduce your reaction time and distract you from sounds of danger.  Cross intersections with caution and always look both ways.  Wear a headlamp or carry a small flashlight to light the way.  Be on the lookout for roots, bad sidewalks and potholes.

By following these simple tips you can have an enjoyable workout during the long, dark winter months.

  4. Rebecca Rusch Places 3rd at La Ruta de los Conquistadores

larutaKT Tape athlete Rebecca Rush returned to Costa Rica to race La Ruta de los Conquistedores and turned out a solid performance with a third place finish in the women’s standings.  La Ruta is billed as one of the hardest and most challenging (if not THE most challenging) mountain bike races on Earth.  Such a punishing race takes a toll on your body, which is why Rebecca uses the KT Tape brand of kinesiology therapeutic athletic tape for shoulder pain caused by hunching over handle bars for hours at a time.  She says it gives her excellent mobility, and she likes not having to take pain medication.  Rebecca writes from her website:

I am really proud of how I raced this week and with my performance. I finished third in a very strong women’s category. Unlike 2006, La Ruta did not have its way with me. Instead, I raced well, gave the course the respect it deserved and had a fantastic time.

Thank you to the La Ruta race organizers for a fantastic time and thanks to all the riders who shared time with me over the past four days.

  5. Stay in Shape This Winter With Nordic Skiing

nordicskiingOne of our favorite reasons for loving winter?  Nordic skiing!  This high cardio sport is one of the best ways to stay in shape during the winter months.  At KT Tape, we know how important it is to stay in shape in every season, and Nordic skiing offers many benefits to athletes of all levels.  It works the whole body and involves all the major muscle groups.  The natural movement of the sport helps strengthen the spine and helps build endurance.  Plus it’s low impact on your joints, which is especially great for those recovering from summer injuries.  As it is a full-body sport, Nordic skiing burns a whole lot of calories too--around 600-800 per hour depending on your fitness level and weight!  This is something to keep in mind during the food-laden holidays.

So how do you get started with Nordic skiing?  Check out Hal Higdon’s Beginning Skiing Guide.  It's a slightly cheesy but extremely thorough website to help the beginner skier.

Nordic skiing is also a sport for the whole family. It is easy to pick up, and children and grandparents alike can enjoy the benefits of this excellent outdoor winter activity.  Check your local ski areas, golf resorts and parks to see if they offer Nordic skiing trails, rentals and lessons.

And don't forget--KT Tape allows full mobility.  So we're here to help make those broad, gliding motions smooth and pain-free.

  6. Ask an Expert: Taping for a Recovering Broken Clavicle

clavicleFacebook fan Colin Rice asked about how to tape up while healing from a broken clavicle.  Here’s what KT Tape enthusiast Physical Therapist Joseph McCaleb suggests:

With anchor over top of sternum (very careful not to place tape on soft area above top of sternum), place one tail directly on clavicle with about 10% tension and end with tail coming over acromialclavicular joint (bump on top of shoulder). Second tail below border of clavicle as shown. AVOID placing tape above the top boarder of clavicle as there are sensitive soft tissue items here. Over top of sternum (not soft area above top of sternum), place one tail directly on clavicle with about 10% tension and end with tail coming over acromialclavicular joint (bump on top of shoulder). Second tail below border of clavicle as shown.

  7. Enjoy the Great Indoors with our Gym Survival Checklist

gymIt’s getting to be that time of year where enjoying your workout outside becomes more challenging.  Some days it's nearly impossible with temperatures below zero and icy trails and roads.  So, you'll probably find yourself dusting off that ol’ gym membership you keep paying for and put it to use.  If you're not a regular gym-goer, it can be somewhat intimidating.  Many people feel the stress of fighting traffic to get there, crossing your fingers that the equipment you want to use is available, or feeling the pressure of working out as hard as the person next to you.  One of the easiest ways to make the gym experience the best it can be is to be prepared.  We’ve put together a gym survival checklist.

    1. Designate a specific gym bag.  This bag is for the gym and only the gym, and ensures the following contents always make it there.
    2. KT Tape: To aim for a pain-free workout, tape up before you train.
    3. Extra set of workout clothes:  We’ve all been there-- you get to the gym, start changing and see you’ve forgotten your shorts.  It’s always smart to have a back up.
    4. Towel:  Nothing stinks more than when the gym is out of towels.  Just bring your own, it’s that simple.
    5. Toiletry kit:  Since you might have to go back to work, a meeting, or dinner, be sure to smell good after your workout.
    6. iPod and headphones:  Unless you like to listen to the chatty Kathy on the treadmill next to you, make a killer playlist that will motivate you.
    7. Water bottle:  It’s so important to stay hydrated.  We recommend going with an eco-friendly reusable bottle like the ones from Hydro Flask.  It's BPA free, stainless steel and can keep your water ice-cold for up to 24 hrs.
    8. Granola Bar:  If you have a healthy option in your bag, you'll be less likely to do that post-workout Burger King run.
    9. Sports watch:  Keep track and monitor your workout with a smart fitness watch like the M-Series from Suunto.  It's a heart rate monitor and workout training guide all in rolled into one.
    10. Extra hair ties:  Ok, this is only for those with long hair,  but you’ll be happy you have some extra hair ties to get your mane out of your face during your workout.  Loose hair + sweat = yuck.

    Happy training!

  9. KT Tape Launches First Private Label Line for Premiere Sports Med Clinics

AirrostisquareOrem, UT – Nov. 22, 2010—KT Tape, category leader in motion-based sports medicine products, introduces a new level of support for clinical professionals with the launch of private-label Kinesiology Therapeutic Tape. Now in addition to specialized treatment options, clinicians can offer customized products that enhance their own brand—specific to their practice and patient platforms.  The first line of private-label KT Tape is launching in partnership with the Texas-based Airrosti family of rehab centers.

After performing an extensive study on existing kinesiology tape brands that examined suitability for Airrosti’s stringent medical treatment standards, Airrosti Rehab Centers selected KT Tape as a brand of choice across all 53 of its nationwide practices earlier this year.  “We were very pleased with the results of our study, and we have a high level of confidence in the quality of KT Tape,” says Dr. Jason Garrett, VP of Training and Treatement Standards at Airrosti.  “Kinesiology tape is an integral part of our rapid recovery treatment model, and we’ve been fortunate to find such a strong partner in KT Tape.”

The KT Tape and Airrosti teams worked together to design the new Airrosti-branded product specifically for its clinicians and clients, launching this month for all Airrosti clinics.  “We were most impressed with the level of customer service and flexibility we received from KT Tape,” Dr. Garrett continues, “Everyone on the team was extremely professional and highly responsive to our customization needs.  This new private label product allows us to significantly enhance brand awareness.” Dr. Garrett reports that the Airrosti branded KT Tape has also been tremendously effective at generating additional buzz and excitement at marketing, athletic, and other events.

“We are proud to be chosen by Airrosti as a top provider of Kinesiology Therapeutic Tape,” says KT Tape VP Jim Jenson. “We strive to deliver products and services based on needs of the clinical professionals we support, and the Airrosti private-label KT Tape is one example of many new products that demonstrates our commitment and responsiveness to our medical professionals.”

Based in San Antonio, TX, Airrosti Rehab Centers’ performance-based rehab utilizes a highly specific and hands-on assessment, diagnosis, and treatment model for acute and chronic injuries. KT Tape is a key component to many of Airrosti’s treatment strategies, focusing on delivering one-on-one patient care, achieving consistent outcomes, and getting patients back to their activities quickly and safely.

KT Tape applications can help athletes to treat common sports injuries such as runner’s knee, shin splints, IT band pain, plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, and quad or hamstring strains.  Winner of the 2009 NATA “Best in Show awards for consumer health care products, KT Tape is used extensively by clinicians and rehab clinics as well as by consumers.

  10. Rebecca Rusch at Race Across the Sky Premiere

rebeccaNovKT Tape super athlete and two-time Leadville 100 Champion/record holder Rebecca Rusch is a now a movie star.  She is featured in the 2010 Race Across the Sky film which chronicles the intense Leadville Trail 100 race, which Rebecca won and crushed the women’s course record.  Showing at a select number of theaters across the country, the film celebrates the grit and determination it takes to participate in such an event.  Rebecca writes from her website:

The Leadville Trail 100 was the highlight of my season this year both professionally and personally.  I trained with that race as a focus with the goal of repeating a win and attempting to break the women’s course record.  This all happened in August and I’ve come down off the high, however Thursday was my chance to re-live the experience all over again.  I was asked to be the only woman on the athlete panel, along with Levi Leipheimer, Dave Wiens, Jeremy Horgan-Kobelski, and Eric Weinhenmayer.  As featured athletes we were treated like royalty by Citizen Pictures, including car, hotel, and the VIP treatment at the film.  I brought an Idaho posse along with me for moral support and as a thank you for their hard work getting me through this season.

The panel discussion on stage was broadcast LIVE to 500 theaters around the US.  We did not get prepped with the questions before hand and we were absolutely winging it.  I have to say it was a bit stressful to walk out there, sit in that chair and know that every single viewer around the country was listening to our answers.  I searched the crowd for Greg, but couldn’t find him.  I tried to focus on sitting up straight, not fidgeting and delivering coherent answers when I was called on.  It was a blast and I think it went fairly well.  After the first panel discussion, we were escorted to our seats to watch the film.

I was honored to be a part of the premiere and the athlete panel and to meet some of the legends of cycling.  Thank you to my sponsors.  Thank you to the Leadville Trail 100 family for creating such a special event.  Thank you to Citizen Pictures for putting this magical event onto the screen for the whole world to experience!
