Strings Attached: KT Tape's Role in Relieving Pain for Violinists

Playing the violin is not only a passion but also a demanding physical activity that can lead to playing-related musculoskeletal disorders (PRMDs). In a recent study conducted at the Faculty of Health Sciences, the effectiveness of Kinesiology taping in alleviating playing-related pain and improving upper extremity function among violinists was investigated. Understanding the Study:
The study involved 117 professional violinists who were randomized into three groups: Kinesio Taping group, placebo group, and control group. Over the course of one week, participants in the Taping group received therapeutic tape application, while those in the placebo and control groups received sham tape application or no application, respectively. Various outcome measures, including the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (DASH) score, Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), grip and pinch strength, were assessed at baseline, immediately after the intervention, and one week later.

Key Findings:
While the overall group-by-time interaction for DASH was not significant, participants in the Kinesiology Tape group reported a slight improvement in playing-related pain compared to the other groups. Post-performance pain intensity and grip strength of the left hand were also significantly improved in the KT group. These findings suggest that KT Tape may have a positive impact on reducing playing-related pain and improving grip strength among violinists.
